The JADE trio in 1997 (F. Munier, L. Quantin, R. Louis-Servais)

In 1997, Renaud Louis-Servais set-up the JADE instrumental trio with Laurent Quantin (batterie) and François Munier (basse), which aim is to mix the Rock energy with the Jazz harmonic richness. Laurent Canas, a keyboard player who used to play with Michel Jonasz, joins the band in 1999, and the bass player is replaced by Eric Evangelista. A new quartet is born and starts playing concerts locally. Laurent Quantin leaves the band in 2000 and is replaced by Alain Bidot-Naude, newly arrived from the Basque country with a first prize from the Agostini school in Bordeaux in his pocket. The quartet has found its name – ILUNA – and plays a lot of concerts around Paris and at the Baiser Salé jazz bar (Paris). A four-track demo recorded in 2001 gets very good reviews. Henri Dorina, bass player, joins the quartet in 2003. The band matures thanks to this experienced musician who has worked alongside Rido Bayonne, Moktar Samba and Paco Sery.

The ILUNA quartet in 2003 (L. Canas, A. Bidot-Naude, H. Dorina, R. Louis-Servais)

Laurent Canas leaves the band in 2006 and is replaced by Guillaume Roussel. In 2008, the band reaches semi-final stages at the prestigious International Songwriting Competition with its title ‘Gimmick’, and again in 2009 with two titles ‘Thème d'Iluna’ and ‘Euria (Cycle de la pluie)’. At that point, the band felt the need to record the different facets of its music and began digging through the music material composed over the past 10 years (almost literally!) to select part of it for the album. It is the opportunity for a name changing and the quartet will be named RLSG from then. Instead of recording in a ‘conventional’ studio, the idea was to set up two fully compatible home studios, to work separately whilst being able to share recordings. Alain set up one studio for acoustics, drums and brass, and Renaud another to record the bass, guitar and keyboards. Recording could begin, with the help of Steve Prestage (Gino Vannelli, Gary Moore, Peter Gabriel...) who provided valuable sound recording advice... Franck Guicherd who joined the band in 2010 recorded the bugle and most of the keyboard takes.

Alessandro Nocco, met in 2008, travelled specially from Italy for 4 days to record saxophone parts and several months later… the debut album, titled 'ILUNA' was finally ready. For live performances, Alain Debiossat (Sixun saxophonist) replaces Alessandro Nocco, and Pierre Accourt (Raùl Paz, Enzo Enzo) supports Franck Guicherd on synthesizers and programmations.

The 'ILUNA' album was very well reviewed in USA and Europe. Some tracks are still well ranked in US jazz-rock web radios, like Latch Radio (the tracks “Gimmick” and “Dom” were several times #1 on the Top-20 listeners playlist). The album had also very good reviews in european magazines (Guitarist Magazine, Guitare Extreme), american specialized websites (GuitarNoize, Jazz-Rock.com, AbstracLogix, RisingMagazine) and jazz-rock web tv show like JazzRockTV (Germany)...

In 2014, Renaud Louis-Servais calls two musicians he admires a lot, the french-born keyboardist Philippe Saisse (Al Jarreau, David Bowie, Al Di Meola, Simon Phillips, etc...) who lives in Los Angeles, and the australian drummer Virgil Donati(Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, Frank Gambale...) to offer them a collaboration on his next album (release in June). The 'Epic Circus' musical video is shot in early 2015 in Los Angeles, featuring Virgil, Philippe and Henri.

The story goes on...

Renaud — Biography

Renaud Louis-Servais

photo bio renaud

Renaud Louis-Servais was born in France in 1972. His father was a classical guitar player, and Renaud started playing the guitar at the age of 8.  During the next five years he joined his first hard-rock band, SENTINELLE, then several pop rock cover band with which he toured the suburbs of Paris. Attracted by virtuosity and working exclusively “by the ear” at that period, he enhanced his guitar expertise mostly by transcribing his favorite guitar players’ licks — which included Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Steve Lukather, among others.

As he grew older his musical influences became many and varied (jazz, progressive rock, jazz-rock, funk, Latin). Yes, Weather Report and the Pat Metheny Group were three major discoveries, and listening to such jazz guitarists as Pat Martino, and “fusion” guitarists like John Mc Laughlin, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, Allan Holdsworth and Greg Howe fed his own guitar-playing style construction.

The first album ILUNA (2011), mirrored what had always been driving him musically: the pleasure to move freely between ‘metal’, progressive music, jazz and rock, with a lot of attention paid to composition and sound quality. It was entirely recorded and mixed by Steve Prestage (Gino Vannelli, Gary Moore, Peter Gabriel, Marc Bolan). Three tracks from that album reached semi-final stages at the prestigious International Songwriting Competition (ISC).

Fond of musical pedagogy, Renaud Louis-Servais has also taught the guitar to more than 400 students in 20 years. In 2013, he taught one of his young students, Tina S (13 y.o.), the Eddie Van Halen “Eruption” solo — and Tina’s video quickly became a huge hit, reaching more than 7 million views within a few weeks.

He made also several videos demonstrating guitar solo covers on his YouTube channel (more than 140.000 views). He is usually asked by music schools and festivals to give some guitar master-classes in numerous domains (improvisation, harmony, musical theory), and more and more often asked by web guitar sites like Guitare Live (France) or RiffState (USA) to film educational guitar videos for them. He is now working on the second RLSG album, coming end 2014.

Virgil — Biography

Virgil Donati

photo bio virgil

Virgil Donati was born on 22 October 1958 in Melbourne, Australia of Italian descent. He got his first drumset at age 2. He started playing soon after with his father's showband, and kept on doing these shows until he was around 6 years old.

He joined his first major rock band and signed with his first major record label at the age of 15. The band was first called Cloud Nine, but was later renamed Taste, with whom he recorded 3 albums. At 21, playing jazz with Allan Zavod and Brian Brown, and rock with Peter Cupples' band, he was a busy touring and session drummer in Australia. His own pop band, The State turned into Southern Sons, which led to Donati's first taste of international fame, with their self-titled debut selling multi-platinum and producing the international hit single 'Heart In Danger'.

During the 1980s Donati's drumming was a feature of the Melbourne-based jazz-rock fusion band 'Changes (Virgil Donati Drums, Joe Chindamo Keyboards, Mark Domoney Guitar, Steve Hadley Bass, John Barrett Saxophone), which later became Loose Change (a quartet - same lineup as 'Changes' minus Saxophone).

The big break came in 1995 where Donati's first solo album Stretch was released. In 1999 Donati released On The Virg: Serious Young Insects through Melbourne based record company Vorticity Music.

In 1999, Ex-Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian hired Virgil to play drums, and co-write on his debut solo record Planet X. The collaboration morphed into the metal-fusion band Planet X. Together they have released three studio albums; Universe, MoonBabies, Quantum, and one live album, Live from Oz. Donati has also made numerous live appearances worldwide with fusion leaders Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech.

In 2004, Donati was voted the no.1 clinician of the year by the readers of the popular drummer magazine, Modern Drummer. In 2007, he toured with French superstar Michel Polnareff on his sold out comeback tour of France.

Donati played with many artists, including Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth, Bunny Brunel, Tony MacAlpine, Scott Henderson and Frank Gambale. These days, Donati lives and spends most of his time in the United States playing with a number of different bands. Donati was also one of seven drummers auditioned to replace Mike Portnoy in Dream Theater. As of fall of 2012 Donati has been touring extensively with guitarist Allan Holdsworth and bassists Jimmy Haslip and Anthony Crawford, playing at various venues in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Virgil Donati plays Pearl drums with "Signature Virgil Donati" snare, Sabian cymbals (HHX, saturation, HH and AA series), Vater sticks and Remo drumheads.

Philippe Saisse is a French Grammy Award-nominated Smooth Jazz and New Age music keyboardist, producer and arranger.

He was born in Marseille and raised in Paris. After studying at the Conservatoire de Paris he won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. He became the protégé of Gary Burton and debuted on Al Di Meola's Splendido Hotel. He also worked with Nile Rodgers and Felicia Collins in the album Outloud and wrote for David Sanborn. He has also worked in the alternative rock, jazz fusion and rock world for David Bowie, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Paul King, The Rolling Stones and others.

Between 1988 and 1990 he performed as the regular house band keyboardist in The Sunday Night Band, during the two seasons that the highly acclaimed music performance program Sunday Night ran on NBC late-night television.

Saisse's 2008 solo album, At World's Edge, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Although it did not reach the commercial success normally expected of an album boasting a cast of highly ranked musicians, it reunited Saisse with two old friends: bassist Pino Palladino, and drummer Simon Phillips. The three performers joined together as an instrumental rock/jazz fusion trio ensemble, PSP. Their debut album, PSP LIVE, on the C.A.R.E Music Group label (of Munich) and the Forest Records label has been supported by a minor tour of Europe from 2009 through February 2010, spotlighting the talents of each performer in the songs chosen for their set list. The trio finished up their tour in Japan at the end of March, 2010, having allowed Palladino time in February to honor his responsibilities as the touring bassist with The Who, at the Super Bowl XLIV half-time show in the United States.
